Samsung Bridge of Life

Samsung’s Bridge of Life, winner of the Public Relations Grand Clio at the 2013 Clio Awards, involved the transformation of the Mapo Bridge across the Han River to discourage suicide attempts. Close to Seoul’s financial district, the bridge has become known for attempted suicides. The interactive bridge now has sensors on the guardrails that light up when people walk by, offering up messages of comfort (“The Best is Yet to Come,” or “Tomorrow’s sun will rise”), kind words and even jokes, crafted in consultation with psychologists. The city of Seoul is now working with Samsung to transform Hangang Bridge into another Bridge of Life.

Psy Gentleman

South Korean rap artist Psy, known for his mega hit Gangnam Style (over 1.5 billion views on Psy’s Youtube channel), has released a music video for his follow up hit “Gentleman”. The music video has clocked up over 170 million views since its release on April 13, breaking a record for the fastest clip to reach 100 million views on Youtube. The Gentleman video has been banned from broadcast on KBS, one of Korea’s largest television channels. A KBS statement suggested scenes from the music video could encourage anti-social behaviour. The offending sequences in the video include Psy jaywalking down an empty street and kicking a traffic cone labelled “No Parking”.

PSY Gangnam Style

PSY (Park Jae-sang), the South Korean K-Pop rap artist, has built up over 350 million views on the Youtube version of his music video, “PSY Gangnam Style”. Released on July 15, the music video shows PSY performing his horse-riding dance move with a range of guest artists in the posh Gangnam District of Seoul, South Korea. Classy dress and cheesy dance moves provide a parody of the shallowness associated with trendy lifestyle. Appearing with PSY are 4minute member Hyuna, Big Bang members Daesung and Seungri, 5 year old Korea’s Got Talent competitor Hwang Min-woo, Korea’s Nation host Yoo Jae-Suk, and TV personality No Hongchul.
