Displacement Line

Visual artist Mauricio Esquivel is using currency to explore social issues related to migration, colonialism and war. El Salvador has used the USA dollar as its currency since 2001. “Displacement Line” uses the USA 25 cent coin, the quarter, to look at ways in which people and values have been displaced. The eagle is cut out of the coin and redistributed in ways that challenge the power of currency over the emergence of social capital.
