Shakira, Latin-pop singer from Colombia, teamed up with Fugees hip hop songwriter and artist Wyclef Jean to produce “Hips Don’t Lie”, music track and music video.
The music video, “Hips Don’t Lie”, has been uploaded to YouTube more than seven hundred times. ‘Hips Don’t Lie’ was nominated in seven categories at the 2006 MTV Music Video Awards, for Video of The Year, Best Female Video, Best Dance Video, Best Pop Video, Viewer’s Choice, Best Choreography in a Video, Best Art Direction in a Video.

‘Hips Don’t Lie’ is a remake of “Dance Like This”, recorded by Jean Wyclef for the Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights Soundtrack in 2004, with Claudette Ortiz. The adaptation for Shakira’s hit was developed by Wyclef Jean, Jerry “Wonda” Duplessis, Shakira, Latavia Parker and Omar Alfanno. It was released in February 2006, in Shakira’s second English album, Oral Fixation Vol. 2, heading to number one in the United States.
Filming for ‘Hips Don’t Lie’ was directed by English director Sophie Muller, from Oil Factory, in Los Angeles. Oil Factory hosts ‘Hips Don’t Lie’ as a 3.106 mb quicktime video.
Some of the dance moves, and most of the dancers and costumes in the ‘Hips Don’t Lie’ music video come from Colombian festival, Carnaval de Barrangquilla.
The ‘Hips Don’t Lie’ music video has attracted a fan’s version (Yahoo Music), and a number of spoofs on YouTube and Google Video.
