The Tale of Thomas Burberry

Burberry has released “The Tale of Thomas Burberry”, a commercial designed as a movie trailer, telling the story of the fashion company’s founder. The trailer is described as “160 years in the making, a story inspired by the pioneering discoveries of our founder, reimagining key events that have shaped Burberry’s history”. Domhnall Gleeson plays Thomas Burberyy, the draper who invented gabardine, a tightly woven textile, and recruited high profile customers as his brand ambassadors. Sienna Miller provides the love interest. Dominic West plays Sir Ernest Shackleton whose 1914 Antarctic expedition was outfitted by Burberry. Lily James plays Betty Dawson, based on Betty Kirby-Green the pilot who in 1937 wore Burberry clothing on a flight from England to Cape Town and back. Joshua Whitehouse plays a World War I soldier wearing a Burberry-outfitted trench coat.

The Tale of Thomas Burberry

The Tale of Thomas Burberry weaves the young founder of Burberry in with the brand’s connection to key brand ambassadors and markets. Burberry was established in 1856 when 21-year-old Thomas Burberry, a former draper’s apprentice, opened his own store in Basingstoke, Hampshire, England. He died in 1926, years before Betty Kirby-Green flew the Burberry Plane in 1937.

Stills of the cast members and key moments in the film will appear in print ads starting this week in titles including French and British Vogue. The holiday campaign will run through the end of December.
