YouTube Rewind 2015: Now Watch Me

For the last day of 2015 we provide an close up look at YouTube Rewind: Now Watch Me 2015, with pop culture references, a list of all sixteen Easter eggs. Filmed in Los Angeles, New York City, the south of England, Las Vegas and Mexico City, the video provides not only a tribute to the hits and stars of 2015, but also to memes from 2005 through to the present. The YouTube Rewind 2015 video was produced at Portal A Interactive.

Watch the behind the scenes video.

The video begins with a nod to the Ad Council Love Has No Labels campaign, with a skeleton dancing to a mashup of OMI’s “Cheerleader” and Justin Bieber’s “What Do You Mean?”. YouTube star Lilly “Superwoman” Singh pops out from behind the screen and dances in front of a wall painted like the LGBT Pride flag before jumping into a ball pit, a tribute to Roman Atwood’s ‘Crazy Plastic Ball Prank’.

A beach scene provides an entire choreographed routine to a segment of “Cheerleader”. A sand sculpture spells out Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, the name of the Welsh town named by Channel 4 News weatherman Liam Dutton.

We move to a basketball gymnasium in New York City to see the 100 Years of Nae Nae, in which ten dancers perform the same routine in five different years: 1925, 1955, 1965, 1985 and 2015. Heaven King brings in her rendition of Silento’s song “Watch Me.” Portal A filmed a group of 10 dancers performing the same routine set in five different time periods: the 1920s, 1950s, 1960s, 1980s and present day. Banners on the wall refer to archery championships.

We’re taken down to the countryside outside Mexico City to see Latin American YouTube stars dancing on a bus, a reference to Major Lazer and DJ Snake’s music video for “Lean On”. YouTube-star-turned-TV-host Grace Helbig does some carpool karoake with “The Late Late Show” host James Corden in the front seat (reference to Justin Bieber/James Corden) and fire erupts from an electric guitar atop the bus “Mad Max”-style.

Dean Smith’s 365 Day Proposal video is connected with Shia LaBeouf’s “Just Do It” Motivational Speech.

The release of two new versions of Five Nights at Freddy’s video game is connected with the popularity of NY Pizza Rat.

Rival groups of YouTube stars dressed in blue-and-black or white-and-gold lip-sync battling in the cage from Sia’s music video for Elastic Heart while a remix of The Weeknd’s song by The Hood Internet plays in the background, a reference perhaps to the Lip Sync Battle with Will Ferrell, Kevin Hart and Jimmy Fallon.

The Ten Year section, February 14 2005 to December 9 2015, introduced with a screen reminiscent of Back to the Future, provides tributes to the Ice Bucket meme (2014), the Volvo Trucks Split (2013), Felix Baumgartner’s supersonic freefall from 128k for Red Bull (2012), Rebecca Black Friday (2011), Double Rainbow Guy (2010), The Lonely Island I’m On A Boat (featuring T-Pain) (2009), JK Wedding Entrance Dance (2009), Charlie Bit My Finger (2007), Mentos and Coke Eruption (2005) and Evolution of Dance (2006).
