“The Human Arabesque”, an experimental film and photography project, has been nominated for Yellow Pencil for Film Craft (direction) at the D&AD Awards. The film, developed as part of The Power of X campaign, was used to open the inaugural TEDxSUMMIT, hosted by Doha Film institute. The X in the summit logo is humanized to represent the self proclaimed global ‘TEDxer’ community. TEDx is mashed up with Qatar’s Middle Eastern culture, with inspiration was drawn from the traditional Arabesque patterns of in Qatari art.
“The Power of X” represents how amazing ideas spread and multiply when people get together through TEDx. Architecture, dance, mathematics and magic were melded together in an 18-meter high, triangular, mirrored structure that hovered over a multi-colour moving floor. The Human Arabesque was filmed in one take, using a “no smoke, just mirrors” approach.
The Human Arabesque film was developed at We Are Pi, Amsterdam, by creative director/copywriter Rick Chant, copywriter/art director Barney Hobson, agency producer Jamie Kim, planner Alex Bennett Grant, account supervisor Alex Bennett-Grant working with TED X Doha coordinator Jim Stolze.
Filming was shot by director Körner Union via Big Productions, Paris, with producer Raphaël Carassic, director of photography Laurent Tangy, editor Matthilde Carlier and production designer Laurent Tesseyre.
Post production and animation was done at Mikros Image.
