Kia Space Babies

Kia’s Super Bowl advertising campaign in 2013 included a television commercial, “Space Babies”, aired during the fourth quarter of the game. The ad involves a six-year-old boy, a passenger in a 2014 Kia Sorento Limited, posing the classic question “Where do babies come from?”. Caught off guard, his father conjures up the wondrous tale of Babylandia, a distant utopia filled with baby humans and baby animals of all kinds. They graduate from Babylandia and board rocket ships and travel across the universe, parachuting down from the sky and finding their Earthly parents.

Hey, my name is Harry Whitaker, I follow this blog, and I am studying Social Media Theory and Practice with @dr4ward at @NewhouseSU #NewhouseSM4. This was definitely one of my favorite ads of the Super Bowl. Although this advertisement, Axe Apollo’s, and E-Trade’s were bashed for using an “old trick” through referencing space, I disagree with that article in the New York Times. Just because Tang may have been one of the first brands to use space in a commercial does not mean advertisements that are set in space are unoriginal or are caught in the past.
