BUND (Friends of the Earth Germany) ran a unique charity concert in Berlin, featuring a 100 year-old chestnut tree, to raise awareness of the 15,000 city trees the city had lost over the last few years. A touch sensitive membrane construction was tailor made to fit the tree. The impact of each falling chestnut produced an artistic composition of sound and light. People who donated to the BUND cause were thanked. SMS donors received a personal message from the tree. Online donors received an exclusive download track. After the concert Berlin DJ star Robot Koch produced a remix which continues to raise funds. The campaign won a Gold Design Lion at Cannes International Festival of Creativity.
Friends of the Earth Germany registered a new donation record for the preservation of trees with an increase of 800% compared to the average month. Hundreds of people registered at the Tree Concert information counter to receive further information and the event even attracted several new members. Friends of the Earth Germany not only profited from the direct donations, but also from being perceived as a brand that cares about nature in the city.
