Google’s announcement of KitKat as the name of the newest Android mobile operating system is the latest in a line of confectionery-related names, each corresponding with a letter of the alphabet. The first two operating systems, 1.0 and 1.1 went without code names. The third system, 1.5, started the trend in April 2009 as Cupcake, paving the way for Donut (1.6), Eclair (2.0 and 2.1), Froyo (2.2), Gingerbread (2.3 and 2.4), Honeycomb (3.0, 3.1, 3.2), Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0), Jelly Bean (4.1) and KitKat (4.4). Each logo released by Google incorporates elements of the Android robot logo designed by Irina Blok.
The Android logo was designed by Irina Blok. The confections naming scheme was proposed by Android project manager Ryan Gibson.
The Google Android statues were created at Themendous, New York.
