Pepsi is running “Crowd Surfing”, a television commercial set in a San Sebastian beach party. Footballers Leo Messi, Didier Drogba, Fernando Torres, Frank Lampard, Sergio Agüero and Jack Wilshere join in a game of football supported by thousands of partygoers, with music provided by DJ Calvin Harris. Music is “Let’s Go”, by Calvin Harris, featuring Ne-yo.

The Crowd Surfing ad was developed at CLM BBDO, Paris, by art director Mark Forgan, copywriter Jamie Standen and agency producer France Monnet.

Visual effects were produced at Framestore, London, by colorist Dave Ludlam, 2D lead artists Chris Redding and Russell Dodgson, and a team of 20 spanning crowd specialists, Nuke compositors, roto artists, animators and technical directors.
Framestore created a new proprietary crowd system in order to fulfil the commercial’s massive scale. The system, developed by Diarmid Harrison-Murray and Martin Aufinger, was built in Houdini using mo-cap data captured at Framestore’s in-house motion capture facility.
Due to the limited availability of the hero footballers, the live action elements were spread across three shoots in three different countries, supervised by Chris Redding. Most of the live action crowd elements, body doubles, Calvin Harris and his DJ stage were shot over six days in Romania. The hero players, with the exception of Messi, were shot at Shepperton Studios in England, with Messi being filmed later in Barcelona.
