The Lost Thing

The Oscar for Animated Short Film in 2011 goes to “The Lost Thing“, a 15 minute animated short film based on the picture book by Australian author and illustrator, Shaun Tan. The Lost Thing tells the story of a boy whose bottle top collecting hobby leads him to discovering a strange creature on the beach in Perth, Australia. He tries desperately to find a home for the creature, fighting the indifference of the city’s occupants.

Filming was shot by directors Shaun Tan and Passion Pictures founder Andrew Ruhemann, and produced at Passion Pictures Australia, with producer Sophie Byrne, narrator Tim Minchin, animator Leo Baker, CG supervisor Tom Bryant, sound designer John Kassab, sound editor Adrian Medhurst and Daniel Varricchio, sound effects recorder Bart Bee, storyboard editor Polly Watkins, and offline editor Jamie Foord.

Music was composed by Michael Yezerski at Nylon Studios, Sydney.
