Life at Mother London

UK advertising agency Mother London has brought in renowned war artist Matthew Cook to produce a set of illustrations depicting life inside the agency. Between 14th – 18th November Mother London’s Twitter feed will provide links to over 20 images created by Matthew Cook, hosted on a separate blog above-the-lines.tumblr.com. An exhibition of the work will be shown at Downstairs at Mother in the New Year.

Cook, who’s had his artworks of the current conflict in Afghanistan exhibited in both the Imperial War Museum and National Army Museum, spent a week at Mother creating a series of illustrations that show every part of agency life from lunchtime to morning meetings to making coffee.

It’s the second time that Mother’s asked an artist to capture life at the agency. Earlier in the year, photographer Nick Ballon photographed life at the agency in 140 Characters at Mother, which were tweeted and then hosted on their own blog.

Mark Waites, Creative Partner at Mother said: “We wanted to invite Matthew in to draw what he saw at the Mother offices, not only because he’s an amazing draughtsman with a beautiful and unique style, but because he’s witnessed the extremity of battle. After his work in Afghanistan we thought it would be interesting for him to turn his gaze on the on the inconsequential bullshit that happens at Mother.”

Cook, said: “It is a dream job to be given free access to a company and very little guidance. I can experiment, make mistakes and above all, have fun drawing. I’m sure the results are better in the end. The people at Mother quickly got used to me lurking in the background and soon forgot I was there so I could catch a glimpse of everyday life.”
