Moby One Time We Lived

Moby’s music video for “One Time We Lived”, launched in 2009, is a stirring yet very calm and still digital exploration of mortality, featuring the legendary techno performer singing against a shuffling panorama of sunsets, palm trees, hillsides, and the glimmering ocean. Macabre imagery, a floating mask, a bloody finger, occasionally floats over the scene, reinforcing the song’s melancholy spirit and haunting message, while typography delivers poignant reinforcement to the lyrics.

Moby’s cover note reveals more on the background on the video.

“a few months ago i was talking to my friend mark pellington and i asked him to make a short film/video for the song ‘one time we lived’. the only condition was that i wanted him to make something artistic and personal, without any concerns for whether or not it would ever actually get played on tv. he’s made a very personal and very emotional video, and i love it. he shot it on his home video-camera, which is in keeping with the nature of the album, which was recorded in my bedroom. i hope you like what he’s made, and i hope that you appreciate the honesty and the beauty in his short film/video as much as i do. thanks.”

Moby also commissioned Robert Powers and team to produce an animated version of the track.

Lyrics

One time we lived
Like the time would never leave
What time we had
The luxury to breathe
I couldn’t see an end
There was no end in sight
Time has risen up time has pulled us down
Bringing darkness to the light

I remember the way you looked
The sun had set
The lights were down
I remember the light in your eyes
Do you remember at all?
Do you remember at all?

Isn’t that what we wanted?
Isn’t that what we wanted?
isn’t that what we had?
Do we know what we need?
Now that its gone
Isn’t that what we wanted?
Isn’t that what we wanted?
isn’t that what we had?
Do we know what we need?

One time we lived
Like the time would never end
And now it breaks
Those left alone again
And while the waters course
By the old and pale light
See just what I’ve lost
And die into the night

I remember the way you looked
The sun had set
The lights were down
I remember the light in your eyes
Do you remember at all?
Do you remember at all?

Isn’t that what we wanted?
Isn’t that what we wanted?
isn’t that what we had?
Do we know what we need?
Now that its gone

Isn’t that what we wanted?
Isn’t that what we wanted?
isn’t that what we had?
Do we know what we need?
Now that its gone

Moby is great, I’ve been a huge fan of his music for a few years. Apart from him offering his music free of charge to non-commercial projects, he is also holding a contest for a music video for his latest track – Wait For Me. A lot of interesting entries. But, to me, since Moby and cartoons/comics always go hand in hand, i particularly like this one

If you like some of the videos, and think you might want to see a couple of them on TV as official moby vids, go ahead and cast a vote:-)
