Lance Baxter, the voiceover artist recording as D.C. Douglas, has hit the news with his voicemail message left on the answerphone of conservative pressure group Freedomworks. The move has cost him his role as voiceover in the new Geico Shocking News campaign, a follow on from the 2007-2008 Geico Celebrities advertising campaign. Baxter’s not mad at Geico, saying, “GEICO shouldn’t have to take a political stand. They’re just a business.” But he’s not finished with Freedomworks yet. He’s provided the voiceover for his own provocative music video, the Tea Bagger Boogie.
During the Health Care vote in March 2010 Baxter was so upset by the slurs the Tea Party crowd angrily yelled at Barney Frank and others that he called FreedomWorks on the phone. During his impulsive call he inquired as to their intelligence level, wondered if they had a plan on how to spin the eventual news of one of their members turning violent and killing someone, and left his phone number because he wanted someone to call him back and defend their Tea Party actions. Matte Kibbe from Freedomworks put a recording of Baxter’s voice message online and encouraged supporters to phone both Baxter and Geico to reassure them that they were not mentally retarded killers.
