Instead of Abracadabra

Instead of Abracadabra, (Istället för abrakadabra) a 20 minute film by Swedish film director Patrik Eklund, has been nominated for Best Live Action Short Film at the 2010 Academy Awards. Tomas (Simon J Berger) is a little bit too old to still be living with his parents, but his dream of becoming a magician leaves him with no other option. Bengt, his father, just wants him to grow up and get a proper job. At Dad’s birthday party Tomas gives a bizarre magic show for his parents, the birthday guests and first and foremost the beautiful new neighbor. Tomas’ alternative to “Abracadabra” is “Chimay!”

Filming was shot by director/editor Patrik Eklund and producer Mathias Fjällström at Direktorn Fabrikorn, with cinematographer David Grehn.

The film premiered at the Gothenburg Film Festival in 2008, where it won the Startsladden short film prize and audience choice.

The five live action short films nominated at the 2010 Academy Awards are Instead of Abracadabra, The Door, Miracle Fish, Kavi, The New Tenants.

The five animated short films nominated at the 2010 Academy Awards A Matter of Loaf and Death, Logorama, French Roast, The Lady and the Reaper, Granny O’Grimm’s Sleeping Beauty.

The Oscars will be announced on Sunday March 7.
