Google responds to Chile Earthquake
Google has responded to the 8.8 scale earthquake experienced in Chile on February 27, with a page connecting internet users with care agencies and the People Finder, an embeddable widget. The Support Disaster Relief in Chile page provides opportunities for donations to UNICEF and Direct Relief International. Search facilities include Google News, YouTube, and Real Time updates on Google Search. The People Finder widget, in English and Spanish, allows users to enter the names of missing persons and look for others. Currently the tool is tracking 14000 people.
The People Finder application was developed at Google in response to the Haiti earthquake, building on lessons learned from similar applications used during the September 11 2001 World Trade Center crisis and Hurricane Katrina. See more on the People Finder blog.
