Erykah Badu in Window Seat

Erykah Badu (Erica Abi Wright), the Queen of Neo Soul, has got people talking with her music for “Window Seat”, a track on her newly released album, New Amerykah Part Two (Return of the Ankh). The video shows Erykah walking down Dealey Plaza, the Dallas street in which John F Kennedy was assassinated in November 1963. The video begins with Badu pulling up in a 1961 Lincoln. What happens next, in Eryka’s words, was “[S]hot guerilla style, no crew, one take, no closed set, no warning, two minutes, in downtown Dallas, then ran like hell… I was afraid. But I was ready.” Over two minutes the singer removes her clothing, layer by layer, until she stands naked on the street, with nothing but the word on her back, “Evolve”. The walk is ended with a gunshot. As the camera swings around the buildings above Eryka provides a voiceover (see after the break).

Erykah Badu Window Seat

They play it safe… Are quick to assassinate what they do not understand… They move in packs… ingesting more & more fear with every act of hate on one another. They feel most comfortable in groups, less guilt to swallow. They are us… this is what we have become… Afraid to respect the individual… A single person within a circumstance can move one to change… to love his or herself… To Evolve!!!

Filming was shot by Coodie Rock (Coodie Simons) and Chike Ozah (Coodie and Chike) via Creative Control with producer Kareem Johnson at Trigger Happy NY.
