Samboy Chips, an iconic Australian brand known for its advertising in the 1980s and 1990s, have returned to the shelves of Australia in response to requests on Facebook. The brand, known for its advertising tag lines, “The Flavour really hits you”, and “Hit me with a Samboy chip”, is being promoted through online competitions on Facebook and YouTube.

Friends of Flavour

Fans of Samboy were invited to build Facebook Groups with “Samboy is back” as the first three words of the group name. The person organising the largest group was to win $10,000 along with a huge supply of Samboy Chips. Winners for each Australian state were to win $1000 along with Samboy Chips. The winner was “Samboy is Back – JOIN NOW TO WIN $10,000 FOR THE RED CROSS BUSHFIRE APPEAL”, created by Kimberley Evans and Jon Ward. Between February 9 and February 14 the group attracted over 100,000 members, attracted, no doubt, to the good cause.

Flavour Hit Film Festival

The second social network phase of the Samboy comeback is a YouTube video competition. The prize of $5000 will go to the creator of the video that attracts the most views.

Doing well in the stakes so far is marketing blogger Julian Cole, who was inspired by Kimberley’s efforts to create a video promsing to donate the prize money to the Victorian Red Cross appeal for victims of bush fires. Perhaps this trend of hijacking social media competitions for a higher cause will change the way companies begin their online marketing campaigns.

Hit Me with a Samboy Chip

The 1995 television commercial featuring a variety of Australian celebrities furthering the slogan to “hit me slowly, hit me quick, hit me, hit me, hit me baby one more time”, imitating the song Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick by Ian Dury & The Blockheads.
