Playing for Change Songs Around the World

Playing for Change is a multimedia music project bringing together musicians from across the globe to advocate for a better world. The campaign team, developed by producer Mark Johnson (Timeless Media Group), has gone on to create the Playing For Change Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation which builds music schools for children around the world, beginning with the Ntonga Music School, in Gugulethu, South Africa.

The Playing for Change project started in 2004 with the organization’s self described goal to “inspire, connect, and bring peace to the world through music”. The creators of the project built a mobile recording studio and traveled around the world to record local musicians performing the same song. Filming started in March 2005 in Santa Monica, before the team headed off to New Orleans, Barcelona, several locations in South Africa, India, Nepal, the Middle East and Ireland.

The songs, available on the Playing For Change YouTube channel and a CD/DVD, include Stand By Me, One Love (Bob Marley & The Wailers), War/No More Trouble (Bob Marley & The Wailers), Don’t Worry (Pierre Minnetti). Talkin About a Revolution (Tracy Chapman), Biko (Peter Gabriel), Better Man (Kevin R. Moore / Anders Osborne), Chanda Mama (Ananda Giri / Enzo Buono), Love Rescue Me (U2 / Bob Dylan) and A Change Is Gonna Come (Sam Cooke), God Bless America.

Stand By Me

The project’s first recording was in Santa Monica, recording street performer Roger Ridley. The team then traveled around the world to find musicians to add their versions. Musicians featured or involved in the Stand By Me single are Vusi Mahlasela, Louis Mhlanga, Clarence Bekker, Tal Ben Ari (Tula), Bono, Keb’ Mo’, Grandpa Elliott. Ridley has since died. The YouTube video has been over 12 million times.

War/No More Trouble

As the production team traveled they encountered love, hate, rich and poor, black and white, and many different religious groups and ideologies. It became very clear that as a human race we need to transcend from the darkness to the light and music is our weapon of the future. This song around the world features musicians who have seen and overcome conflict and hatred with love and perseverance. We don’t need more trouble, what we need is love. The spirit of Bob Marley always lives on.
