NASCAR Sprint Cup Speedway

Sprint is promoting its sponsorship of NASCAR car racing with “Speedway”, a visual effects laden television commercial. Cars racing with the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing Sprint Cup are shown in CGI action at the Bristol stadium, Tennessee. Iconic monsters of long-exposure light, representing each drivers team, race around a stadium, cheered on by crowds, interacting with another in crashes and sparks.

The Speedway ad was developed at Goodby, Silverstein & Partners, San Francisco, by creative director Franklin Tipton, group creative director Paul Stechschulte, associte creative director/copywriter Ty Hutchinson, associate creative director/art director John O’Hea, executive producer Joshua Reynolds, assistant producers Meagan Moore and Jessica Mehl, account director Mark Schermers, account manager Taleah Mona-Lusky, project manager Christine Piper, music and sound design producer Sarah Gavigan.

Filming/animation was directed by Jeffrey Plansker via Supply & Demand with director of photography Neil Shapiro and line producer Tina Naakane.

Visual effects were developed at MassMarket, New York, by designer Gordon Waltho, executive producer Angela Bowen and Justin Lane, producer Nancy Nina Hwang, assistant producer Cally Morton, animation director Jeffrey Dates, animators Jason Goodman, Boris Ustaev, Will Robertson, 3D leds Florian Witzel, Jacob Slutsky, Dave Barosin, 3D artists Eban Byrne, Andy Hara, Chris Santioanni, Xuan Siefert, Jimmy Gass, Jonah Friedman, Eric Lampi, Kris Rivel, Brandi Lee. The Stadium Look Development was developed by Marco Iozzi with lead Flame artist Jamie Scott, and Flame artists Julian Ford, Chris Staves, Nick Tanner, John Ciampa.

Using models heavily modified from Turbosquid, MassMarket textured the skins of ten hero Nascars and produced as many as 30 cars in some shots. They shot texture reference for the stadium shots on the track at Bristol, Tennessee, capturing HDRI lighting reference, as well as every bit of location detail that was to be recreated in CG.

Editor was Noah Herzog at General Editorial with executive producer Robert Parker and assistant editor Matt Dunlap.

Sound was designed by Bill Chesly at HenryBoy with producer Kate Gibson.

The Monsters of NASCAR

Speedway is a follow up to an earlier commercial promoting the move from the Nextel Cup to the Sprint Cup. This copy is provided by BlueMedia, who produced the decals used on the 24 cars racing at Bristol Speedway. Filming was directed by Michael Mann. See the BlueMedia blog for more details.
