Madrid’s bid to host the 2016 Olympics is symbolized by a logo designed by Joaquín Mallo, chosen by popular vote in an online competition in 2007. Mallo, an Argentinian graphic designer living in Spain, lent his pseudonym, “Corle”, to the name of the colorful hand. He explained that his design humanized the Olympic rings as a continuous line turning into a hand, with a capital M representing Madrid. The hand’s colours represent unity among the different cultures, people, and nationalities that coexist in Madrid. The shape of the hand represents a friendly greeting where one appreciates the freshness of Madrid and its people. See Corle’s portfolio online at Behance.
