Macy’s Christmas Parade in 1924 was staged by Macy’s employees and professional entertainers who marched from 145th Street in Harlem to Macy’s store on 34th Street. The Balloon Animals tradition started in 1927 when Goodyear entered Felix the Cat in the procession. The event has been held every year but for the years 1942, 1943 and 1944.

New balloons in 2009 were the Pillsbury Doughboy, Mickey Mouse (4th version; “sailor Mickey”), Ronald McDonald (3rd version), and Spider-Man (2nd version). Broadway shows portrayed this year were Billy Elliot, Bye, Bye Birdie, Hair and Shrek.
