Empire of the Sun We Are The People

Australian duo, Empire of the Sun, has launched the second music video, “We Are The People”, a follow up to the debut video “Walking On A Dream“. Luke Steele and Nick Littlemore exchange Shanghai for Mexico, exploring themes of life and death.

Empire of the Sun in We Are the People music video

Steele and Littlemore stumble through a Mexican desert, asking a man a bicycle, “Es este el camino a la diosa?”, (Is this the road to the goddess?). When they ask a turbaned man what he’s doing, “Estas escarbando un pozo?” (Are you digging a well?), they’re told, “Si. Es para usted.” (Yes, it’s for you). Finally they reach a sacred building to ask a woman holding a skull, “Esto es la muerte?”. The answer: “Agua es vida” (Water is Life).

Lyrics for We Are The People

We can remember swimming in December
Heading for the city lights in 1975
We share in each other nearer than father
The scent of a lemon drips from your eyes

We are the people that rule the world
A force running in every boy and girl
All rejoicing in the world
Take me now – we can try

We lived an adventure love in the summer
Followed the sun till night reminiscing other times of life
For each every other the feeling was stronger
The shock hit eleven – got lost in your eyes

I can’t do well when I think you’re gonna leave me
But I know I try
Are you gonna leave me now
Can’t you be believing now

Can you remember and humanise
It was still where we’d energised
Lie in the sand and visualise like it’s 75 again

We are the people that rule the world
A force running in every boy and girl
All rejoicing in the world
Take me now – we can try

I know everything about you
You know everything about me
Know everything about us

Beautiful video, gorgeous music. I love Empire of the Sun. I love that still of the video, in which Luke, Nick, and the Goddess(s?) are all standing together, with Nick holding the umbrella over her head. Such a gentleman!

Everyone thinks these guys are just drugees that get high and make these videos out of the fantasies one gets whilst high. Truth is, when you’re famous and have money you tend to lean towards drugs just because you have the money for it. Whether EOTS does drugs or not, their videos take weeks of planning not just some idea and then willy nilly dance around and make a video out of it. They plan those. They planning more. The videos are planned exactly to he out of this world, exotic, different and fun to match their music. It’s all brilliance, really. And the way they dress up and act is similar to how ancient civilizations did, so saying the Empire’s videos are like “Mikado on acid” is a bit of an insult to them and the ancient stuff they refer to. Especially in this video; it has in the end actual shrines from the Day of the Dead holiday (it was filmed around this time), so insulting them is again insulting ancient culture.
Be nice people. This is the type if performance everyone loves anyway. Even if you think Empire is crazy, admit you do enjoy their music videos… admit it cause it’s true ;)
