Germany today celebrates Deutsche Einheit, the Day of German Unity, in celebrations centered in the Saarland state capital of Saarbrücken. The day marks the 1990 unification of the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany) and German Democratic Republic (East Germany). This choice of Saabrucken reminds citizens that Saarland was brought back into Germany in 1957 after twelve years under French occupation.
Last year’s celebrations were held in Hamburg, with the theme of “Culture in Germany” picked up by Scholz & Friends in the key visual, three barges in black, red and gold carrying the names “Einigkeit” (Unity), “Reght” (Right) and “Freiheit” (Freedom).
