Jack White plays the part of a bull fighting matador, self-possessed and oblivious to his assistant in the crowd played by his sister Meg White. White rides into the arena on horseback, heralded by trumpets and cheered on by the crowd. He takes great delight in taunting the bull and soon reaches the estocada, the point where he can plunge his sword in the bull’s chest. Somehow the beast manages to evoke the pity of the matador, with tears, a wink and a blown kiss. Despite the loud disappointment expressed by the crowd, White removes the banderilla from the bull’s side and proceeds to console the animal.

And then in the strange way things happen, the roles are reversed. The hunted becomes the hunter, the hunter becomes the prey…

Filming for Conquest was shot by director Diane Martel with director of photography Wyatt Troll.

Martel came up with the bullring concept in conversation with Jonathan Lethem, author of novels including Motherless Brooklyn and The Fortress Of Solitude. Filming was shot in a bullfighting ring in Artesia, Los Angeles. In an interview with Promo News she talks about the dynamics of working with the animals and staff there. “We had five fighting bulls and one docile cow. Each bull had a time constraint of 20 minutes of full blown action in him, then after that they became bored and uncooperative. Bizarre scheduling that. The bullfighter was amazing to watch too – he had an excellent time.”

Martel is signed with HSI, Los Angeles.

Lyrics

The original song, Conquest, was written by Corky Robbins and popularized in 1952 by Patti Page.

Conquest
He was out to make a conquest
Didn’t care what harm was done
Just as long as he won
The prize

Conquest
She was just another conquest
Didn’t care whose heart was broke
Love to him was a joke
’til he looked into her eyes

And then in the strange way things happen
The roles were reversed from that day
The hunted became the huntress
The hunter became the prey

Conquest
Now you know who made the conquest
She, with all her female guile
Led him helpless down the aisle
She had finally made a conquest

Ahh ahh ahh ahhhhh [x4]
Oooh oooooohh oohhhh

And then in the strange way things happen
The roles were reversed from that day
The hunted became the huntress
The hunter became the prey

Conquest
Now you know who made the conquest
She, with all her female guile
Led him helpless down the aisle
She had finally made a conquest

Ahhhhh

I just wanted to know one thing: were the bulls harmed? Because it looked like they were. And that is very bad
