SpecSavers, a major UK company of opticians, has launched an eerie TV advert promoting their great deals on glasses. “Power Cut” AKA “Lumberjack” shows the ways in which everyone is indirectly affected by a workman’s bad eyesight in a mountain town.
The creepy music cues us into the weirdness of the moment as a barber’s electric clippers mysteriously stop. Redhead children playing in a fountain are spooked, and not by the giant axe that looms above them. In the diner the coffee, the juke box and the freezer have stopped working. Something is happening to the traffic lights, waste disposal, movie projectors, radio stations, telephones, and record players…

The Power Cut advert was developed inhouse at SpecSavers by creative director Graham Daldry, creative Simon Bougourd and Neil Brush and agency producer Sam Lock.
Filming was shot by Daniel Kleinman via Rattling Stick with director of photography Carl Nilsson, and producer Johnnie Frankel. Daniel’s director’s cut goes one step further with the horror feel, including an alien abduction, a dismembered ear and the attempted disposal of a leg in the kitchen.
