E*Trade Banking Baby

E*TRADE launched two TV ads in the 2008 Super Bowl featuring Banking Baby, a little guy with a big guy’s voice. The little kid farts, splurks and looks around while promoting online banking. Each of the ad finishes with “Some people are just born to bank. Ready to take your first step at E*TRADE Bank? Visit us at etrade.com“. (See also our post on the 2009 E*Trade Babies).

was the voice of the commercial (etrade baby) that of Brad Whitford (of West Wing and Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip)?

    • jake says:

Nooooooooooooooooooooope. Sorry, but that was a dumb question. Bradley Whitford doesn’t sound remotely like that. To make sure I wasn’t going crazy I played several BW scenes from West Wing on my DVD player at the same time as clips of the ETrade baby. I was right. I’m not crazy. Again -- sorry for the harshness, but, dumb question.

    • jake says:

Wow. I failed to read all of the other guesses before I commented on your guess. It was probably just so obvious to me that it wasn’t Brad Whitford because I watch way too much West Wing.

All of that being said, there are about 90 dumber guesses on here. Wow, people are dumb.

  2. David says:

Who provided the voiceover for the baby?

  3. Simone says:

I’m always thinking the voice could be Demetri Martin. And also the text, because “I underestimated the creepiness” -- that’s so Demetri

  4. Maud says:

I think it’s Chris Messina. I saw Vicky Christina Barcelona today and every time he spoke (his charater is Doug) I exepcted someone to say and “there’s Bobo the clown!”

  5. leilamh says:

Maud, I had the exact same experience. I turned to my husband during the movie (VCB) and said, “It’s the etrade baby!” I’m dying to find out for sure….

  6. Traci says:

i thought it sounded like Ashton Kutcher

    • babonger says:

i did too i think there may be several different voices…

  7. D.J. says:

I bet someone it was Ashton Kutcher. I think it is…I hope it is.

  8. JM Harlan says:

I think the voice is done by Steve Dildarian — the creator and lead voice of the HBO cartoon series “The Life & Times of Tim”

  9. Jason says:

The voice is done by a director named Randy Krallman. You can search for him and find out more. Great commercials!!!

  10. nick says:

    Its mark walberg.

  11. Mike S says:

If you’ve listened to him enough, you would also believe that it is the comic Mike Birbiglia doing the baby voice over. He has done other commercials and he was also born in 1978 making him 30 years old like the story mentioned on the AdTrack article in the USA Today. My 2 cents.

  12. Cory says:

The voice is Martin Starr from Freaks and Geeks fame (Bill)…he’s also been in many other Judd Apatow projects.

  13. JC says:

I think the voice is commedian Todd Barry

  14. Joe says:

according to the credits above it is Randy Krallman.
“Filming was shot by director Randy Krallman via Smuggler, who also provided the voice over.”

  15. LD says:

Whoever it was, why was it changed recently? It was the same voice as on the Mr Clean commercials, and thats changed too. Why?

  16. Lindsay says:

The new etrade baby’s voice sounds just like singer Jonathan Coulton but I can’t find anything to back that up… and I read on my favorite comedian Pete Holmes’s website that he does the voice… but I don’t know when that has been updated.

  17. Richard says:

i think the voice is wallace shaw the dwarf guy his character name was the great vinsini i probably spelled it wrong. (from the movie the princess bride starring robin wright penn and cary elwes)

Just in case anyone was actually curious….

“Just as important as the face of 2010′s E-Trade baby was the voice actor. Grey auditioned dozens of high-profile comedians (“a bunch of guys from 30 Rock and SNL alums,” Behnen says) but settled on Pete Holmes, a relatively unknown aside from the New York stand-up circuit (left), to be the voice of the 2010 E-Trade baby. “Everything that comes out of his mouth,” Myhren says, “is just completely weird and random.”

  20. s d says:

definitely DEFINITELY not Pete holmes, I knew him in person from the Chicago comedy circuit. I think what the above article meant was that directing was done ‘VIA’ smuggler as well as the VO.

  21. Keith says:

The baby’s voice sounds like Ted (Josh Radnor) from how I met your mother.

  22. Zoooma says:

keith’s right. i think that every time i hear it.
