VW Wilco Campaign
When you get into a Volkswagen it gets into you. Which can be weird. So says the voiceover in the advertising campaign just launched by Volkswagen, featuring several songs from Wilco‘s album, Sky Blue Sky. The series of TV ads promotes the Volkswagen GTiMkV. Thus far the songs in the VW campaign are “The Thanks I Get” (a bonus track from Sky Blue Sky sessions, available for download via the Enhanced CD and via iTunes) and “You are my Face”. All six of the songs to be used will be available streamed from the VW USA site, www.vw.com.
In “Tow Truck”< a tow truck driver gets into a Volkswagen GTiMkV and is so impressed by the feel of the car that he moves it forward one space in courtesy for the driver. Music is "The Thanks I Get". He's so caught up in the feel of the car that he can't do the handover. Music is "You Are My Face". The VW Wilco campaign is being developed at Crispin Porter + Bogusky, Miami, by chief creative officer Alex Bogusky, executive creative director Andrew Keller, creative director Rob Strasberg, interactive creative director Jeff Benjamin, copywriter Jeff Gillette, art director Conor McCann, director of Integrated Production Rupert Samuel, executive integrated music producer Bill Meadows, integrated senior producer Meghan DeBruler, integrated senior producer (broadcast) Chad Hopenwasser.
Filming was directed by Neil Tardio Jr via HSI Productions, with director of photography Dan Mindel, executive producer Kerstin Emhoff, and line producer Steve Ross.
Editor was Carlos Arias at Final Cut Editorial with executive producer Saima Awan. Colorist was Steve Rodriguez at Company 3. Integrated producer was Rachel Seitel.
Audio Mix was done at Lime Studios.
Response from the Wilco Fans
Wilco has received a bit of flack from fans for selling out. The band members point out on their site that the commercial radio airplay route is getting more difficult for many bands (including Wilco). They see this as another way to get the music out there. They feel okay about VWs. Several of them even drive VWs. This is not the first time Wilco has licensed a song to or even been involved in a commercial. Most recently a TV spot for Telefonica Mobile in Spain used a Wilco song and some years prior Jeff Tweedy appeared in a campaign for Apple Computer. Wilco have licensed hundreds of songs to television shows and films worldwide, from festival-only indie films to major motion pictures and weekly TV shows.
