Mobile network operator O2 is connecting up with Rugby World Cup season with a TV ad featuring members of the Irish team over time running through misty green playing fields. Irish ruby legends Willie John McBride, Ciaran Fitzgerald, Simon Geoghegan and Keith Wood join forces with Brian O’Driscoll and Paul O’Connell to highlight the evolution of Irish rugby since the 1960’s. The voiceover: “It’s not who stands in front of you that’s important. It’s who stands behind you. O2 – official sponsors of the Irish Rugby team.”

Damian Devaney, Marketing Director, O2 Ireland explains, “We want to celebrate the immense level of support that Irish rugby fans give the team – support that the team have commended on many occasions. The advertising campaign line “It’s not who stands in front of you that’s important, it’s who stands behind you” not only reflects the contribution of Ireland’s rugby greats down through the years, but is an acknowledgement of the importance of the unwavering support from Irish fans, and of course, O2.”
O2’s recently updated version of the TV ad is inviting fans to send their own messages of support straight to the team, via the O2 website. Damian Devaney explains further, “O2 is facilitating communication between the team and their fans. As part of this campaign we are enabling fans to send their support through our website. These messages will then be sent straight to the team. We’re really asking fans to see what they can do for Ireland.”
The TV advert was launched on the 17th August and will will run for 10 weeks throughout the Rugby World Cup across 14 TV channels, with special packages around rugby matches.
