Meteor, the UK mobile phone network, has ruffled a few feathers with this year’s Christmas advertising campaign. Their latest television commercial was pulled off air after complaints that the ad was denigrating the elderly and encouraging cruel behaviour.

The offending TV ad shows an elderly woman, played by 92 year old Jessica James, being evicted from a Christmas party when a present detector reveals she has brought a tea cosy as a gift, rather than a Meteor phone. The woman yells out, on her way through the door, “You can stuff your turkey!”, and pulls down the draperies.

Another Christmas ad shows unwanted gifts being used for alternative purposes. “Whatever happened to last year’s Christmas gifts? The tacky ornaments, the cheap aftershave, the cheesy books? Give them a gift they’ll want to keep…”
