Claire Danes Wears The Boyfriend Trouser for Gap
Gap’s latest TV campaign for spring focuses on the new boyfriend trouser for women using the classic Broadway show tune, “Anything You Can Do, I Can Do Better” and actors Claire Danes (Shopgirl, The Family Stone) and Patrick Wilson (Little Children, Running with Scissors).

The spot begins as a khaki curtain opens to reveal Patrick Wilson and Claire Danes in the middle of a stage. Patrick is dressed in a classic white shirt and khakis pants, while Claire wears an oversized white shirt without pants. With a lighthearted sentiment, Patrick does a dance step challenging Claire to “dance-off” as the music lyrics “anything you can do, I can do better” resonate in the background. Claire responds by matching Patrick’s steps with her own flare and the dance competition continues as each person ups the ante with more difficult steps. Claire eventually wins as she miraculously – and humorously – snatches Patrick’s pants off and puts them on, reinforcing the inspiration behind the look and feel of Gap’s new boyfriend trouser for women.

“The spot takes an iconic Gap classic – the khaki – and gives it a twist. It captures the fun of wearing a boyfriend’s favorite,” said Marka Hansen, president of Gap North America.
Gap’s spring 2007 khaki line offers a refreshing new take on iconic Gap khaki styles. The collection includes a broad range of laid back, easy khaki silhouettes. The look for women is all about the boyfriend trouser -- this must-have item for spring is so relaxed and comfortable it’s like the pants were pulled out of ‘his’ closet and put into ‘hers’.
The TV spot debuts on March 8 and runs through April 4 on national TV including network, cable and syndication.

The Gap Khaki campaign was developed at Laird and Partners by creative director Trey Laird, associate creative director Carl Byrd, producer Leigh Donaldson, account manager Jackie Blue.
Filming was directed by Jonathan Dayton, Valerie Faris via Bob Industries, with director of photography Ellen Kouras and producer Bart Lipton.

“What’s so cool about this commercial is all the right elements came together – the commercial tells a fun story, the cast is amazing and the choreography and dancing is great,” said director Jonathan Dayton. “This commercial feels like a little, thirty second romantic comedy to me. There’s just nothing better than seeing two people who have great chemistry dance together,” added Valerie Faris, Jonathan’s directorial partner and wife.

Telecine was done at Company 3 by Dave Hussey. Editing work was done at Nomad by John Murray.

Visual effects were done at Brickyard VFX by Lead Flame artist Patrick Poulatian, Flame artist George Fitz, producer Diana Young, executive producer Kirsten Anderson, and music supervisor John Huck.
Brickyard VFX performed extensive screen cleanup for the ad, as well as split screen work to adjust the timing of the two actors. Brickyard’s team of VFX artists were focused on making the footage shine with general beauty work and finishing, including combining various shot passes to achieve the final look.
Music and sound design were the responsibility of John Bolen at Play Studios.
Music for the spot, “Anything you can do”, comes from Irving Berlin’s musical Annie Get Your Gun, and is sung here by Ethel Merman and Bruce Yarnell. Choreography was by Marguerite Derricks.
Anything You Can Do
Wikipedia background to the Irving Berlin song
Lyrics sung by Annie Oakley and Frank Butler
Anything you can do,
I can do better.
I can do anything
Better than you.
No, you can’t.
Yes, I can. No, you can’t.
Yes, I can. No, you can’t.
Yes, I can,
Yes, I can!
Anything you can be
I can be greater.
Sooner or later,
I’m greater than you.
No, you’re not. Yes, I am.
No, you’re not. Yes, I am.
No, you’re NOT!. Yes, I am.
Yes, I am!
I can shoot a partridge
With a single cartridge.
I can get a sparrow
With a bow and arrow.
I can live on bread and cheese.
And only on that?
Yes.
So can a rat!
Any note you can reach
I can go higher.
I can sing anything
Higher than you.
No, you can’t. (High)
Yes, I can. (Higher) No, you can’t. (Higher)
Yes, I can. (Higher) No, you can’t. (Higher)
Yes, I can. (Higher) No, you can’t. (Higher)
Yes, I can. (Higher) No, you can’t. (Higher)
Yes, I CAN! (Highest)
Anything you can buy
I can buy cheaper.
I can buy anything
Cheaper than you.
Fifty cents?
Forty cents! Thirty cents?
Twenty cents! No, you can’t!
Yes, I can,
Yes, I can!
Anything you can say
I can say softer.
I can say anything
Softer than you.
No, you can’t. (Softly)
Yes, I can. (Softer) No, you can’t. (Softer)
Yes, I can. (Softer) No, you can’t. (Softer)
Yes, I can. (Softer)
YES, I CAN! (Full volume)
I can drink my liquor
Faster than a flicker.
I can drink it quicker
And get even sicker!
I can open any safe.
Without bein’ caught?
Sure.
That’s what I thought--
you crook!
Any note you can hold
I can hold longer.
I can hold any note
Longer than you.
No, you can’t.
Yes, I can No, you can’t.
Yes, I can No, you can’t.
Yes, I can
Yes, I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I No, you C-A-A-A-A-A-A-A-A-A-A-A-A-N’T--
CA-A-A-A-N! (Cough, cough!)
Yes, you ca-a-a-an!
Anything you can wear
I can wear better.
In what you wear
I’d look better than you.
In my coat?
In your vest! In my shoes?
In your hat! No, you can’t!
Yes, I can
Yes, I CAN!
Anything you say
I can say faster.
I can say anything
Faster than you.
No, you can’t. (Fast)
Yes, I can. (Faster) No, you can’t. (Faster)
Yes, I can. (Faster) Noyoucan’t. (Faster)
YesIcan! (Fastest)
I can jump a hurdle.
I can wear a girdle.
I can knit a sweater.
I can fill it better!
I can do most anything!
Can you bake a pie? No.
Neither can I.
Anything you can sing
I can sing sweeter.
I can sing anything
Sweeter than you.
No, you can’t. (Sweetly)
Yes, I can. (Sweeter) No, you can’t. (Sweeter)
Yes, I can. (Sweeter) No, you can’t. (Sweeter)
Yes, I can. (Sweeter) No, you can’t, can’t, can’t (sweeter)
Yes, I can, can, can (Sugary)
