Red Hot Chili Peppers in Dani California
Red Hot Chili Peppers continued their fascination with things California in their music video, “Dani California”, a tour through a series of rock bands in concert, premiering on MTV on April 4, 2006.
Tony Kaye, director and director of photography, came up with the idea of paying homage to moments in rock and roll. The band chose the periods they wanted to honour. Flea, in the June 2006 issue of Classic Rock magazine, said that the music video was exploring eras rather than people: “rockabilly, British Invasion, pyschedelia, funk, glam, punk, goth, hair metal, grunge, and ourselves being the sum of all those parts.”
Tony used a number of different films, including 16 mm reversal and 35 mm color negative stocks, lenses, high definition video and still images to create different looks. I used an old 1970s zoom lens, and fused and blended the colors in telecine, and also added the odd scratch or two. (See the Kodak MTV 2006 Cinematographers profile).

Working with Tony Kaye was producer, Rachel Curl, at Above The Sea.
Art director Justin Dragonas won the award for best art direction in a music video at the 2006 MTV Music Video Awards.
Editor Peter Goddard, at Poppy Films, hosts Dani California as an 11.79 mb quicktime video.

Lyrics for Dani California
[Verse 1:]
Gettin’ born in the state of Mississippi
Papa was a copper and Mama was a hippie
In Alabama, she would swing a hammer
Price you gotta pay when you break the panorama
She never knew that there was anything more than poor
What in the world does your company take me for?
Black Bandana, Sweet Louisiana
Robbin’ a bank in the state of Indiana
She’s a runner, rebel and a stunner
On her merry way sayin’ “Baby, whatcha gonna?”
Lookin’ down the barrel of a hot metal 45
Just another way to survive
[Chorus]
California, rest in peace
Simultaneous release
California, show your teeth
She’s my priestess, I’m your priest
Yeah! Yeah
[Verse 2:]
She’s a lover, baby, and a fighter
Shoulda seen it comin’ when it got a little brighter
With a name like “Dani California”
Day was gonna come when I was gonna mourn ya
A little loaded she was stealin’ another breath
I love my baby to death
[Chorus]
[Bridge:]
Who knew the other side of you?
Who knew what others died to prove
Too true to say goodbye to you
Too true to say, say, say
[Verse 3:]
Push the fader, gifted animator
One for the now and eleven for the later
Never made it up to Minnesota
North Dakota man was a gunnin’ for the quota
Down in the badlands she was saving the best for last
It only hurts when I laugh
Gone too fast
[Chorus]
