Rugby League players from Australia and New Zealand appear in a nude calendar launched at Aussie Stadium in Sydney on September 27, with a proportion of the proceeds going to Australia’s National Breast Cancer Foundation.
The calendar, shot by photographer Pedro Virgil, features Paul Whatuira (West Tigers), Brent Webb (Auckland Warriors), Johnathan Thurston (Nth Qld Cowboys), Justin Hodges (Brisbane Broncos), Ben Ross (Cronulla Sharks), Amos Roberts (Sydney Roosters), Ashley Harrison (Sydney Roosters), Riley Brown (Newcastle Knights), Nick Youngquest (Penrith Panthers), Stuart Webb (Sydney Roosters), Greg Bird (Cronulla Sharks), Michael Witt (Manly Sea Eagles), Liam Fulton (West Tigers).
The National Rugby League of Australia has distanced itself from the publication. In fact concern has been expressed about the appropriateness of the photography. Youngquest in particular has copped flak from his bosses for revealing too much in the June 2007 photograph.
The National Breast Cancer Association itself has pointed out that while they are recipients of funds from the calendar, they were not involved in the planning or publishing of the calendar.
The Naked Rugby League calendar is available for purchase in black in white or in colour from Australian newsagents as well as from the calendar website, www.nakedrugbyleague.com.au.
This article made it in our local newspaper, the Vancouver Sun, in the Sports section. The photo that accompanied it was a close up of a butt with the Australian flag on both “cheeks”. I am sure that this article has made it in many more newspapers around the world, and the interest in purchasing this calendar could be global. Publicity is exactly what the National Breast Cancer Foundation needs in order for its calendar sales to be successful. But is it going too far? Time will tell. Now, do they ship to Canada?

My friends all acuse me of being in love with Michael Witt so I can’t wait to get this calender and put it up at my place. The fact that the proceeds go to curing breast cancer is a deal clincher for me. My mum got breast cancer and I really want a cure. I can’t believe there are people out there frigid enough to criticise this effort to raise funds for the cause. Whatever we can do to help take the threat of death away from our mums and sisters and girlfriends is worth doing. everyone I know will be getting a calender for Christmas this year.

Nick Youngquest (Penrith Panthers, he is an extremely beautiful man, but he is so dim indeed, a young man who defines himself as a metrosexual, sounds totally brainless, and with a terrible emptiness in his life. He is extremely lucky because his exceptional good looks, but he is very poor inside his heart and soul. I am afraid that he will end in the wrong track of life, if he is not already inside it. When I was in Sydney a friend of mine told me that he was well known as a bisexual, but I believe that a rugby player like him, in spite of his sexual orientation, should not cause such unbelievable damage to his sport. I hope that he will quit playing so new generations do not have such awful example of what a young and successful man should do with his life. He is a public figure, so he cannot hide from the public eye, if he loves to be seen completely naked and in very sexually explicit shots, he must take then the burden of this blindness and decadence, he is a poor little guy and other sportsmen like him should be expelled from their teams.
I bought few copies of the calendar both the black & white and the colored editions and I must say Michael Witt is a standout. Ive been following his career since he moved to Manly and then now with the Warriors.
I met him before at the mall with his folks and he’s one those down-to-earth people who’s so accommodating and so laid back.
Although he looks absolutely amazing in the calendar, Michael is absolutely more stunning and sexier in person.
I managed to chase one down at the start of they year when they were very very scarce then, so good luck trying to find one now! Got the black and white one -- didnt even realise there was a colour one. Probably would have had to get both otherwise.
Hope they have another one next year.
