BBC World Football Sports Prepare for 2006

BBC has been promoting its coverage of the FIFA 2006 World Football Cup with a tv advert full of visual effects, football players and the music of Handel. The BBC World Cup ident opens with river grasses swaying in the summer breeze. The focus softens and sharpens again, taking us across the river to a rural German town with cobbled streets. The air ripples and figures appear to morph into existence from another dimension. We are taken to historic German stadiums and shown star football players playing in the golden ‘in between’ dimension. Players featured include Ronaldinho, Steven Gerrard, Thierry Henry and Wayne Rooney. The spot finishes with the words, “Match of the Day: FIFA World Cup 2006 BBC Sport”.

‘Sports Prepare’ , the music for the BBC spot was arranged by Carl Davis from Handel’s ‘See the Conquering Hero Comes’, and recorded by the BBC Orchestra and Choir. Chris Grubb, BBC Sport producer, points out that it was appropriate to use Handel’s music as he was a German composer who spent much of his adult life in England. The track is available on England The Album 2006, and England Anthems 2006
