Lion Nathan’s Hahn Premium Light is the brand that gives us “Spa bomb” and “Beanbag Bomb”, two of Australia’s funniest television commercials.
The Spa Bomb ad, from 2003, starts with a woman sauntering towards the spa pool, peeling off her bath clothes to the accompaniment of languorous music. She slides into the pool, basking in luxury. What is this? An ad for soap or shampoo? Or perhaps a holiday resort? It certainly has the attention of the women in front of the TV. And the men. All of a sudden a guy takes a running leap into the pool, sending a tidal wave of suds through the bathroom. As the water subsides he reaches for a Hahn Premium Light beer and takes a swig. Voiceover: “Hahn Premium Light. Some drink it because they’re responsible”. The chap looks to his woman and catches the look on her face. “What?”, he says. Voiceover: “Others just love the taste”. Hahn Spa bomb, directed by Paul Middleditch for Clemenger BBDO Melbourne, won the award of “Outstanding Funny TV Commercial” at the 2003 Australian Comedy Awards.
The Spa Bomb commercial was created by a Clemenger BBDO team which included creative director Danny Searle, account director John Rash, copywriter Chris Pearce, art director Barry Baker, account director Lizz Cory and agency producer Thea Carone.
Paul Middleditch from Plaza Films worked with producer Peter Masterton and director of photography Ross Emery. Editor was Peter Whitmore at Winning Post. Music was by Mark Rivett at Song Zu. Post was done at The Lab.
The “Bean Bomb” ad was released in 2004 as a follow up. Once again directed by Paul Middleditch. The ad was filmed in Sydney over two days. We appear to be at a Mediterranean resort. A woman in a sleek swimming (or should I say tanning) suit walks at at a leisurely pace around the swimming pool. She finds her ‘beanbag’ and settles down with sunglasses and cool drink. A waiter places a beer in the icebucket to her side. From the balcony above comes her man, landing in the beanbag and catapulting her into the pool. From here it’s the same… He reaches to the icebucket, grabs his beer and takes a swig. “Hahn Premium Light. Some drink it because they’re responsible”.
